| What part of Raleigh? I know of some good places. Even a great place. Haw River is just out past Jordan lake on 64, Falls Dam up Falls of Neuse, I found a little place out near Wendell, on hwy 97. Just depends on where you want to go. | |

| If you use mapquest or yahoo maps type in River Buffalo Road, city as Pittsboro. For some reason they list it wrong. The actual name of the road is Foxfire Trace. Leaving from Cary on US1 south, take Hwy 64 west towards Pittsboro/Siler City. Keep going till you cross over Jordan lake. I believe it's about 2 miles past Jordan lake that you come to a stoplight with a gas station on the right corner. Go past ths stop light and top the hill. On the downward side you'll see a bridge at the bottom of the hill. That is the Haw River bridge. Pass over the bridge and take the very next left over it. That is Foxfire Trace. Immediately take the next left, which is a service road. That is River Access road. follow to the end and that is Haw river. Standing in the parking lot facing the water, walk out of the parking lot to the right and follow the path over the ditch for about 100 yards and you will come to the rocks.
Or if you want extreme punishment, while on Hwy 64, instead of taking the left onto Foxfire, U-turn and go back across the bridge and turn right just past the guard rail into the little pull off area. Go to the end of the dirt path and you'll see a trail to the left that goes downhill. Follow that trail down to the rivers edge and take the trail on the left (can't miss it, it's the only trail that follows the river). While walking down the trail, you'll have to cross 2 wide drainage ditches. Both are full of rocks, and you could crawl there if you wanted to, but you'd miss the best. Keep walking past the second ditch for about give or take 100 yards and keep looking to the right for paths that lead to the river edge. Once out on the rocks, It's your call as to where to crawl. There are TONS of places! The rock pack streaches for at least 1/4 to 1/2 a mile. We as a group only crawled the first section that you come to, but there is a HUGE area beyond what we were on. I will warn you though, if you go there, be careful where you walk. Some of those rocks out there are as slick as glass even if your shoes are dry. Cell phone reception is sketchy, nextels fade in and out of service, and the nearest hospital is in Chapel Hill which is a 45 min drive up 15/501 after a 15 min walk out of the woods. There is no climbing cliffs to get to any areas, but I'm just saying, it's boondocks out there. If you go, you will not be disapointed. It's beautiful. Plain out-n-out beautiful. | |
